Fall, 2013 Meeting in Cincinnati
By Jim Sullivan
The autumn, 2013 meeting of the Southern Ohio Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (SOS/AAPT) will be on Saturday October 5th at the University of Cincinnati. The SOS/AAPT is meeting in conjunction with the Ohio Section of the American Physical Society (OS/APS).
The OS/APS meeting is a two-day event (Friday & Saturday October 4th and 5th) and more details on the OS/APS meeting can be found at http://www.physics.uc.edu/~osaps2013/ . The theme of the OS/APS meeting is “Dark Matter, Dark Energy.” Those who are registered for the SOS/AAPT meeting may attend functions of the OS/APS meeting – if there is a fee involved (e.g., for the OS/APS Friday night banquet) the SOS/AAPT person will have to pay that fee (just like the OS/APS people) but the SOS/AAPT person will not have to join the APS or pay their meeting registration fees.
At press time the SOS/AAPT has two exciting invited speakers. Dr. Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, a Professor at West Virginia University who includes in her writings The Physics of NASCAR and will speak to us on The Science of Speed. Robert C. Hilborn, the Associate Executive Officer at the national AAPT, will present Next Generation Science Standards and the Revised MCAT: The New Face of Science Education. Merge these presentations with our own contributed papers and our “How I Do It” sessions and this promises to be a very exciting gathering.
A map of the central University of Cincinnati campus is included with the key locations of the meetings highlighted. On Friday the OS/APS meeting will be held in the Alumni Center and on Saturday both the SOS/AAPT and OS/APS will meet on the 3rd floor of Braunstein Hall. The SOS/AAPT is tentatively set to meet in room 325 of Braunstein Hall.
It is recommended that you park in the Clifton Court parking garage (also noted on the map) on the UC campus. Parking on Friday is $10 and on Saturday is $5, payable by credit card on exit.
Our SOS/AAPT meeting will begin at 8:00 AM with our Contributed Paper Session (in parallel) with other OS/APS Contributed Paper sessions. There will be an Executive Meeting of the SOS/AAPT officers at 7:00 AM (all SOS/AAPT members are, of course, welcome). The exact timing of the rest of our SOS/AAPT meeting is yet to be finalized but it will extend into the afternoon.
A registration form is available and must be returned by Friday September 27th. If you wish to submit an abstract for a contributed paper, or request time for a 5-minute “How I Do It” presentation the SOS/AAPT deadline is also Friday September 27th.
OS/APS has a total of five invited speakers that are listed on their web site. Of particular interest to SOS/AAPT members might be the Friday night Banquet Speaker, Dr. Evalyn Gates. Dr. Gates is the Executive Director and CEO of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and has authored many things including Einstein’s Telescope: The Hunt for Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe . If you would like to attend the Friday night banquet it starts at 7:00 PM in the UC Alumni Center. Tickets are $35 each and must be purchased in advance. Special arrangements have been made for SOS/AAPT registrants to obtain tickets without having to register through the APS site. A separate form is available and that payment and form must be received by September 20th- note that this is an earlier deadline than the SOS/AAPT deadlines. These tickets are limited by the available space and requests will be filled on a “first come – first served” basis.
I trust you will enjoy the meeting(s) and look forward to seeing you in early October.
